Week 5: Wikis
This week’s lesson focuses on wikis. A wiki is basically a website that anyone can edit, although some wikis are password protected to limit viewing and/or editing to only those with a password. They are used as collaborative, sharing tools.
Lesson 1: Learn about wikis and discover some innovative ways that libraries are using them.
Lesson 2: Add a few entries to our Lucy’s Librarians Favorites Wiki. If you’ve used word processing and watched the Wikis in Plain English video in the above lesson, you’ll probably find this exercise pretty easy.
If you have any questions, please contact Vicky or Sue S.

Very Cool-Google Satellite Maps
You know I couldn’t leave without out sharing one more web2.0 site with you. I had to share these two photos. They are from google satellite maps. Go to Parc du Champde Mars Paris and move towards the Seine, then zoom in! Way cool!
Or even better go to the Empire State Building and try street view.
see you thursday.

Week 4: Flickr
Week 4: Lesson 1: Flickr Foto Fun
Discovery Resources:
- Flickr Learn More tour (6 steps)
- Mediamazine Flickr Tutorials
- Flickr: Popular tags
Interesting- Last 7 days - flickr Services (3rd party applications & mashups)
and let’s not forget to look at some other libraries on Flickr
Discovery Exercises:
1.
Take a good look around Flickr and discover an interesting image that you want to blog about. Be sure to include either a link to the image or, add the image in your post.
Go to Use the library’s digital camera,or your own, to capture a few pictures of something in the library. Upload these image into the library’s Flickr account [Username: lucylibs Password: 95cedar ]. If you don’t know how to get the photos from the camera to the computer - here are instructions for using the library’s card reader. Tag at least one of the images LRW Library Newington and mark it public. Then create a post in your blog about your photo and experience. Be sure to include the image in your post.
So go ahead, explore the site and have some Flickr photo fun and if you’re interested in looking at some photo hosting sites, then why not check out Jamie’s recommendations & this Wired story. (Thanks Jamie for the link).
PS: A quick word about photo posting etiquette – When posting identifiable photos of other people (especially minors) is it advisable to get the person’s permission before posting their photo in a publicly accessible place like Flickr. Never upload pictures that weren’t taken by you (unless you have the photographer’s consent) and always give credit when you include photos taken by someone else in your blog.
One of my favorite Flickr photos.
